2010-2011 Science Olympiad |
|
|
We are excited to start our fourth year competeing in Science Olympiad! And it is amazing to think about what we have accomplished in 3 years. We have qualified for the state competition twice and we have had several students win medals at both the Regional and State competitions. Last season, we ended with a 4th place state finish in small schools and our team won medals in three events at state:
Science Crime Busters: Silver
Physical Science Lab: Bronze
Solar System: Bronze
This year we are hoping to get an early start on things so that we can avoid the last minute cramming in January and February. So, we have already registered the team so that we will receive the rule book as soon as it becomes available. Once we have the rule book we will begin our search for parents and volunteers that can help with specific events.
You do not need to have a science degree to volunteer, only a desire to help middle school students. As a volunteer you will find that it might take some time to get prepared to work with the kids, but the topics are interesting and fun to learn about. Many coaches have had previous experience and knowledge in a subject due to it being a hobby or from their own educational training. However, some of our most successful coaches didn't know the subject before they started and went through the learning process with the students. Also, I have found that having some snacks and a bit of fun with the subject makes it fun for you and the students.
The time commentment for a volunteer or particpant is dependent on the individuals. I am hoping that in September, October, November and December the students would meet with the event coaches at least once a month to go over the rules, come up with ideas, build projects, make notes, do study guides, complete a lab or go on a field trip relevent to the topic. In January and February the students will typically meet once a week (or more) and in March the students will prepare for state which is usually once a week.
