Over 50 Group News
Over 50 Group Our organization invites parishioners 50+ (single, married, or widowed) to enjoy the fellowship of our monthly social gatherings. We have no dues or responsibilities and normally we "eat when we meet." Members take turns planning the event for each month so we have fresh ideas to look forward to throughout the year. Look for information and deadlines concerning our activities in the monthly newsletter and weekly bulletin.

Over 50 Group – Website Update for July 2010

July – Old Fashioned Picnic:
Let’s gather for an “old-fashioned picnic” where the temperature will be “just right”, ants and flies won’t challenge you for your food, and rain clouds will be on vacation.
Date: Sunday, July 25th
Place: Stewardship Hall
Time: Gather at 5:30 p.m. – Dinner at 6:00 p.m.
Food: Hostesses will provide the meat.  The picnic table will offer potluck dishes brought by attendees.  Suggested dishes: salads (green salad, fruit salad, coleslaw, potato salad), baked beans, desserts, and fixin’s for the sandwiches (lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, cheese, ketchup, mustard and mayo), etc.
Hostesses: Jeanne Heiman (744-1369), Victoria Jackson (744-8293), Barbara Knapp (683-1743).  Call Jeanne if you have questions.  When you make a reservation with any of the three (RSVP deadline Wednesday, July 21st), please let them know what you will bring so they can keep track of the food.

Every “old-fashioned picnic” has games – we will too!  After we’ve picnicked, Victoria Jackson has some fun planned for us by way of Krazie Bridge.  Now, don’t get your blood pressure in an uproar – Krazie Bridge has little in common with regular die-hard Bridge.  Little card skills are required – if you can recognize a heart from a spade (hearts are red and spades are black) that’s all you’ll need to know.  Lots of fun is guaranteed.

Summary of June social:
Those who couldn’t make it to the FlintHills FolkLife Festival in Cottonwood Falls really missed out on a great time.  Although wet weather was predicted, the Good Lord showed the forecasters who was in charge and blessed us with a very pleasant day.  The lawn of historic Chase County Court House was the settlement for many historic presenters (some favorites were buffalo hunters, authentic Indians, spinner and weaver, potter, broom maker) and the kettle corn and homemade root beer were also a tasty treat.  Many of us were drawn to the area where a Native American told Indian folklore as he danced, and several of us joined him in the Friendship and Snake dances.

Our “surprise meal” was served at the home of Karen and Charlie Davis (sister and brother-in-law of Beth Ryland) who live in the area.  The promised “fabulous food” was home cooked by Karen, Beth, and Shirley.  For a nominal $7.00, we ate our fill of melt-in-your-mouth brisket, complemented with salads (3-bean, fruit, coleslaw and potato), baked beans and homemade rolls, iced tea, lemonade and coffee.  Dessert was a scrumptious bonus of cobbler (peach-cherry, blueberry, or rhubarb) topped off with Charlie’s homemade ice cream.

Counting Karen and Charlie, there were twenty-six who gathered around two tables in their home.  All were fascinated by the dining table that had eleven removable sections and stretched more than halfway across the front of the house.  Of course once you got seated you were pretty much confined to your space.  When nature called after too much tea and coffee some quick thinking seniors exited by crawling under the table, to the applause of those not yet in such dire straights.

After dinner we returned to the court house lawn and settled in to be entertained by pickin’ and strummin’ of the TallGrass Pickers (and friends) made up of amateur banjo, guitar, fiddle, base-fiddle, washboard, harmonica, and bones players.  Every once-in-a-while there would be some singing or story telling.  We were all having such a good time the fact that we were an hour and a half from home didn’t prompt us to leave until the musicians called it a night.

Many thanks to Beth and her family for a delightful event!

Step back into mid-1800’s pioneer days
June – FlintHills FolkLife Festival – Saturday, June 12th:
Step back into mid-1800’s pioneer days on the lawn of historic Chase County Court House.  Meet in our church parking lot at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 12th to carpool.

After viewing wild flowers along the way, arrive in Cottonwood Falls at approximately 2:30 and enjoy the Historic Presenters of FolkLife festivities (basket making, hand carving, gourd banjos, pottery making, just to name a few).  Also treat yourself to some homemade root beer and fresh popped kettle corn.

Gather for a surprise dinner at 5:00 – there will be a nominal cost for the fabulous food.

You can head home after dinner, or at 7:30 be entertained by the picking and strumming of the TallGrass Pickers (and friends).  Be sure to bring a lawn chair along for this part of the evening.  We’ll head back home at 8:30, unless we’re having such a knee-slapping good time we want to stay a little longer.

Contact Beth Ryland (office 744-2776 - home 683-9333) or Shirley Luebbert (744-3533) by Wednesday, June 9th to reserve your dinner plate.

Summary of May social:
We had sixteen attend the lunch and lecture at Botanica on May 12th.  The gardens were splendidly arrayed with colors and fragrant scents from roses, peonies, pansies and wild flowers that were in full bloom.  After lunch on the patio we turned our attention to the lecturer from Wichita Art Museum who was very knowledgeable about Norman Rockwell, expounding on details in his creations that would escape the amateur’s eye.

July:
We do not have a coordinator signed up for July.
